View guide: Transmission Filter and Fluid Change Written by: mrdiy PONTIAC GRAND PRIX, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 Your transmission pan has a reusable rubber gasket, so a new gasket is not usually necessary, but one is available, if you need one.
Drive the vehicle to bring the transmission fluid up to operating temperature. Place the vehicle on jack stands or drive it on to ramps. Place a drain pan below the transmission. Begin to loosen the transmission bolts at the back of the transmission pan using a 10 mm socket wrench, but do not remove them completely. After you have loosened all the bolts at the back of the transmission pan, loosen 2-3 bolts on each of the sides. The fluid will start to drain into the drain pan. When the fluid has completely drained, remove all the bolts. Be careful, because there will still be some fluid left in the bottom of the transmission pan. Remove the old filter by carefully twisting and pulling it. There is a round metal ring that holds the filter in the transmission. The ring goes around the end of the tube on the filter. Carefully try to remove the old ring from the transmission. Place the new metal retaining ring on the new filter. Carefully push the new filter into the transmission. Before you reinstall the transmission pan, clean the inside of it with a rag. There is a small square magnet that captures tiny metallic particles that might be floating around in your transmission. Be sure to clean the magnet very well. Clean the rubber gasket, or use a new replacement gasket. Do not use any oil or fluid on the gasket. It will cause your transmission to leak. Reinstall the transmission pan. Fill the transmission with 7-8 quarts of Dextron-III transmission fluid. When checking the fluid level, the vehicle should be running with the transmission in neutral.
