Should a pair of new tires go on the back wheels or on the front

New tires should go on the rear, regardless of which wheels are the drive wheels.

Where did you hear that? If you only need to replace 2 tires, then you should replace which ever pair needs to be replaced.

Basically the front-left and front-right tires should be the same and the back-left and back-right tires should be the same.
