makes a horrible loud knocking sound when cold just when starting after run and put in gear noise stops

Does this only happen when it's cold outside, or after the engine has cooled down? Once you start driving, does everything seem ok?

I have a 97 grand prix with a flaky EGR valve that sticks a little. It will sometimes make noises when idling when the engine is cold and run a little rough at first, but as soon as I start driving it it goes back to normal.
