Upgrading your stock speakers. written by: firemaninil
Upgrading your stock speakers can be a little more tricky than a deck install. One thing your going to have to do is determine what you need most easily done by looking for sizes that fit your vehicles stock speaker mounts. You can find information on your specific car’s stock speakers and what will fit on www.crutchfield.com. There are all types of speakers for those that are just a little better than the ones your car comes with to ones that are for pure performance. It is up to you and your budget on what you get. Keep in mind that most high performance speakers are component speakers and they usually come with some equipment that you will have to mount some where in your vehicle, and usually require an amplifier for normal operation. Once you have decided and purchased your new speakers you are ready for the install. Before you start your install you will need, a repair manual for your vehicle (as this is only a guide and all vehicles are different), the proper tools (set of screw drivers, possibly stock removal key, wire strippers and crimpers, set of sockets, and maybe some specialty tools for your car.), after market stereo install adapters for your car, or barrel connectors/soldering tools. Keep in mind that this install can take anywhere from an hour to around a half a day to complete. To start take your door panels or front speaker grills off according to the instructions in you manual. Then remove your old speakers as per manual. Be sure to unhook the wiring plug from the speakers before you try to walk off with them or you could break a wire in your dash or door. Once old speakers are out of the way wire your new speaker wires into the adapter plugs you purchase, if you don’t have these plugs cut the stock plug from the car off the wires and solder or barrel connect the old wiring to the new speaker wires. Be sure to remember what wire is the positive and what one is the negative. Once you have joined the wires together by either method hook them up to the speaker. Before mounting your speaker test it to be sure it works along with everyone there after. Mount speaker and reassemble door/dash correctly. Then repeat for the rear speakers of the vehicle. Most rear speakers are in the back dash and can be easily accessed from the trunk for replacement. When finished with all speakers clean up extra parts and trash, test them one more time and your ready for fine crisp toons in your car. New speakers will improve sound quality by great measure over stock even without a deck change as long as they are powered properly. It is possible to use a power amp even with a stock deck just ask you local audio store for the right equipment. Enjoy your new sounds.
