Lifting a vehicle with a jack written by: mrdiy
Many repair jobs require you to use a jack to raise the vehicle. Proper safety precautions are absolutely necessary, because you will be lifting a 2 ton vehicle off the ground.

To raise the vehicle:
·Park your vehicle on a hard level surface. Avoid gravel, rocky, sandy, or other soft surfaces.

·Place a wheel chock or brick on the wheel diagonal to the one you are lifting. You can lift both sides on the front or both sides on the back, if necessary, but chock both wheels on the opposite end.

·Apply the vehicle’s parking brake. (If you are performing maintenance on the rear wheel brakes, you will not be able to apply the parking brake. Chock both front wheels instead.)

·If you are going to be removing the wheels, now is the time to loosen the lug nuts.

·Find a suitable jack point on the vehicle’s frame. Most owners’ manuals will inform you as to where you should place the jack.

·Lift the vehicle, following the jack manufacture’s instructions for usage.

·After the vehicle is lifted, place a jack stand under it. You must place the jack stand on the frame of the vehicle. Do not place it on any movable parts that may be damaged if the weight of the vehicle is applied to them. Lower the jack very slowly, so the weight of the car is supported by the jack stand.

·Never work on a car without first placing it on a jack stand. Jacks are only for lifting the vehicle and are not always reliable for holding it up for long periods of time.

·Before working under the vehicle, test that it is positioned on the jack stand correctly and will not fall by pushing and shaking the car.

To lower the vehicle:
·If you removed a wheel, place it back on the car now and finger tighten the lug nuts.

·Raise the vehicle slightly so you can remove the jack stand.

·Lower the vehicle slowly.

·Remember to tighten any lug nuts, remove wheel chocks and disengage the parking brake before you drive the vehicle.
